Feedstocks that we have put through the Slugger system:

Wood
Wood Briquettes
The wood briquettes in the photo above are made from ground waste pallets, shown on the left side of the picture.  When properly ground and at the proper moisture level, wood forms a very durable briquette.  The grind size shown is a good median size, with slightly coarser and slightly finer material also being acceptable.  Wood briquettes can be used for all common purposes such as heating, gasification, electricity generation and even on some barbecues if a clean wood product is used.  "Wood" dies are used for briquetting wood in the Slugger system.

Grasses
Grass Briquettes
Various grasses are suitable for use in the Slugger briquetting system, including but not limited to Switchgrass (shown ground and briquetted), miscanthus, alfalfa, straw, mixed prairie grasses, reed canary grass, hay (good or waste) and many others.  In the Slugger system, these grasses all behave similarly.  Miscanthus and alfalfa seem to work particularly well, but with the proper grind size and moisture level they all will form a good briquette.  Grass briquettes are used for heating or electricity generation, and can be burned in an increasing number of commercially available residential and industrial sized heating appliances.  Lawn grass is generally not suitable for briquetting because it is far too wet and it is thought that there is simply not enough of it in any given area to make it feasible.  "Grass" dies are used for briquetting these various grasses in the Slugger system.

Corn Stover (stalks & leaves)
Corn Briquettes
Corn Stover is an agricultural waste left over from corn farming, and there is a large amount of it available as an unused biomass waste product.  Briquetting this product and using it for heat is a "holy grail" for many farmers, and we are working to ensure the Slugger system will work with this product.  Ground corn stover is currently undergoing testing and initial results are extremely positive.  All we need to do is develop the proper dies and this feedstock material will be fully approved.  It is likely that special "Corn" dies will be required for briquetting corn stover.

Sorted MSW (municipal solid waste)
MSW Briquettes
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) consists of a wide variety of materials including paper, plastics, metals and glass.  The ground material shown above was sorted to remove all recyclable plastics and ferrous metals, leaving only paper, non-recyclable plastics, aluminum and bits of glass.  This material is mostly what fills landfills across the world, but if it is ground to the consistency above it can be pressed into the briquettes that you see above to the right.  Such briquettes are not suitable for a residential market but can be burned cleanly and safely in special high temperature gassifiers for heat or even electricity generation.  In such a system, even the aluminum burns, and the glass melts and forms clinkers in the ash which can then be recovered and recycled, leaving no waste or undue pollution.  Such a scenario is far better than filling landfills.  "Wood" dies are used for briquetting Sorted MSW in the Slugger system.

Leaves
Oak Leaf Briquettes
We have tested ground mixed leaves, primarily oak, with some success.  Generally, the moisture level will initially be too high unless the leaves are dried first.  The briquettes formed so far have held together, but they are not particularly durable.  This may be able to be improved by varying the grind size and moisture, and more testing will be done to determine how the Slugger system will work with leaves.  There is indeed a small amount of grass (switchgrass) mixed in with the leaves in the photo above - we do not feel that such a small amount has any effect but we will be testing leaves extensively in the future.  Currently, "Grass" dies are used for ground, dried leaves.
