Slugger Biomass Briquetting System

Slugger demo unit and bulk feed bin shown mounted on optional
trailer
The patent pending "Slugger" is a biomass briquetting
system which
utilizes a farm tractor's PTO as a source of power. It is currently being
developed and the final production units are expected to be capable of between
450 - 700 lbs. of 1.5"
diameter round briquettes
(slugs) per hour of operation. The operator will feed
ground material into the unit via a suction hose. The Slugger
is intended to be a comparatively low-cost machine suitable for an
individual, cooperative or company who wishes to manufacture combustible fuel for themselves or for
sale to commercial and residential heating markets.
Why use the Slugger briquette press?
- Smaller diameter briquettes with user adjustable length
allow for automatic feed into appliances
- Use wood, grass and various other biomass or ag residues to
make combustible fuel
- Cost saving management for transportation of fuel by
reducing the volume of the raw material
- Converts sustainable biomass crops or waste into a valuable
combustible fuel as a heating source
- Start making profits by converting biomass or waste into a
valuable marketable product
- Design allows Slugger to be powered by a PTO or an electric
motor as a user selected option
- Slugger unit (with bulk feed bin) is small enough to fit on
a small trailer making it a portable solution
Specifications:
Power
Requirements: |
30 minimum horsepower PTO (40 hp for 2" diameter
version), 450 RPM nominal
230V, 20 amp single phase electricity also required for
operation |
|
Briquette Size: |
1.5 inch (38mm) diameter, nominally
3/4" to 1.5" long each
2 inch (50mm) diameter, nominally
1.5" to 3" long each |
| Throughput: |
450 - 650 lbs. of 1.5" briquettes per hour of continuous operation
(estimated)
650 - 1000 lbs. of 2" briquettes per hour of continuous operation
(estimated) |
| Feed System: |
Bulk feed bin may be filled with air conveyance, through
user supplied auger or feed silo or bin. This must be
specified upon order. |
Feedstock Moisture
Requirement: |
10% nominal but Slugger can tolerate between 8% and 14%
(more or less depending
on feedstock being used) |
| Binder Requirement: |
None for switchgrass and wood. None expected for most other
materials. Unit does not
have capability to add binders. Powdered lignin may be
added to feedstock after
grinding if required. |
Recommended
Feedstock Grind: |
Hammermill or Tub Grinder with 1/4" screen (1/4" -
1/2" screen for wood) |
| Unit Total Weight: |
Base unit is approximately 4000 lbs. (5000 lbs for 2"
diameter version) |
| Construction: |
Heavy duty welded structural steel frame |
| Manufacture: |
Assembled in USA from mostly US and Canadian components |
| Order: |
Pre-production units are currently available with a
minimum 50% deposit
(or 70% deposit for 2" diameter) required.
A limited number of these units will be sold at a
significant discount over final
production price. Full production will commence after
several months of field testing.
2008 production will be limited. |
Current options Include (at extra cost):
- Entire unit including bulk feed bin can be mounted on a utility trailer (road legal if
desired) for easy transport and mobility
- 3-phase electric motor to replace PTO hookup
A limited number of pre-production units will be manufactured and
made available
(to selected
individuals or groups only) for order at a
discounted price
(with 50% deposit).
