Trommel Screens For composting and screening soil and stone. Electric and hand-cranked versions available. We searched high and low for a good trommel screen to get the rocks out of our rocky soil and couldn't find anything, so we decided to make our own. After a few crazy ideas we came up with a simple and surprisingly effective design. Our trommel screens are perfect for the home gardener, small farm, or anyone who has rocky soil or for world-friendly people who compost. These screens are lightweight but ruggedly built and made to last. They are available in both electric and hand-cranked versions. Electric Trommel Screens As the screen rotates, you shovel your dirt or compost into the end of the screen. The fine particles (dirt, compost) fall out the bottom and the larger pieces (rocks, clumps) slide down the chute and into a pile. You can place a wheelbarrow under the screen to catch the good stuff or just let it collect into a pile. The electric version is well worth the extra cost. A high quality motor and gearbox provide the rotation at the flip of a switch. A protective guard is added to the electric version for extra safety. Hand-Cranked Trommel ScreensIf you have friends willing to turn a crank you can save yourself some money. The hand-cranked trommel screens work the same way as the electric versions, except instead of a motor, you have a second person turning a crank as you shovel your dirt into the screen. The second person can also help keep you company while you work, whereas the gearbox and motor are boring by comparison. Specifications:
